Psalter Lane Art College was an unconventional student-run venue that entertained, inspired and shaped several generations. The venue is perhaps most famous for hosting the first gig by The Human League in February 1978 (the famous blue plaque stated 12 June which was a later gig). An ever-changing number of internal promoters booked bands, making requests to the Student Union Stage Services at Pond Street for use of a PA and using tables in the refectory as a stage, with the understanding that they were wiped down ready for breakfast the next day! Touring bands included The Drones, Au Pairs, Delta 5, I Scream Brothers, Section 25, UV POP, Cat Wax Axe Co and The Farmers Boys. Vice Versa played the adjoining Bar 2 in 1980, totally reinventing themselves to return and debut as ABC (fully garbed in fashion cycling wear), Clock DVA showcased their Thirst LP with the classic line-up including Paul Widger & Charlie Collins and Artery infamously performed in the corridor. The venue was a launch pad for Sheffield bands, like In The Nursery, providing a chance for experimentation by young musicians in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. In The Nursery's debut on 25th June 1981 (supporting They Must Be Russians) was fortuitously captured on cassette by the live sound engineer and handed to the band. The recording displays all the characteristics of a C90 cassette and includes the occasional thump and click that scatter the performance, culminating with a vocal mic cutting out during Despotism - after which the problems appear to get fixed. These flaws have been left unedited. The recording acts as an important document of a band at the start of their career.
