Emma-Jean Thackray
Emma-Jean Thackray is an English multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and bandleader from Leeds, classically trained on the cornet long before she took up the trumpet, guitar, bass and drums she now plays herself. Her sound pulls spiritual jazz, funk, soul and Detroit house into the same room and lets them argue. She self-released the Walrus EP in 2016; her 2021 debut album Yellow topped the UK Jazz & Blues chart and won Jazz FM's Album of the Year. For 2025's Weirdo she wrote, performed and recorded nearly every part alone in her South London flat, leaving room only for cameos from Reggie Watts and Kassa Overall, and the record earned a Mercury Prize nomination. She has directed the London Symphony Orchestra and runs her own label, Movementt.
