a1 - four hands ft. elsas a2 - was that the last time? b1 - time runs like a river ft. Yu Su b2 - you go to the middle of nothing 'you go to the middle of nothing' is a vinyl-only release of recent recordings from duval timothy’s studio in london. the project is about moments in time - shared with others and alone. compositionally, duval is exploring staying close to the same place, physically and spectrally; finding variation without having to travel far. four hands with elsas is a single take freestyle with both musicians playing prepared piano at the same time. the hammer of the top note of the piano has snapped off so playing that note creates the distinct percussive and mechanical sound. elsas' embracing of this sound formed the foundation of the improvisation. was that the last time? sees timothy writing by layering piano takes captured with the analogue mixer. time runs like a river is duval’s second collaborative piece released with canadian electronic producer Yu Su, a single take freestyle improvisation with Yu Su manipulating the sound by running bells along the piano strings. you go to the middle of nothing is duval’s first piece of modal drone, with the same chord and note tonal centre explored across piano, bamboo saxophone and melody horn. the spectral centre builds a force that the piano chords circle around.
