Ramage is a small town in North Carolina, known mainly for its annual horserace, which draws a host of tourists in the first weeks of June. Outside of the race, the town is quiet, with a general atmosphere of slow decay and stagnancy. Most of its younger generation spend their days looking for a way to escape, or cope. One such individual is Joe Osborne, now entering into his spring semester as a freshman at a nearby college.
