Car Seat Headrest
Car Seat Headrest began in the back seat of a family sedan in Leesburg, Virginia, where a seventeen-year-old Will Toledo recorded vocals in the only space quiet enough to let him work undisturbed. Over four years and twelve self-released albums, Toledo built a devoted online following before signing to Matador Records in 2015 and expanding into a full band based in Seattle. His lyrics are dense and literary — equal parts coming-of-age confessional and structurally ambitious rock songwriting, with references ranging from 2nd-century theologians to drunken house parties — and the music has scaled from lo-fi bedroom recordings to something approaching classic-rock grandeur. The 2016 album Teens of Denial was the band's critical breakthrough; in 2018 Toledo revisited his 2011 cult classic Twin Fantasy as a full-band reimagining, and in 2025 released the rock opera The Scholars, drawing on story-song cycles from The Who and David Bowie.
