Zao
Founded in Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1993 and transplanted to Pennsylvania before the decade closed out, Zao built one of metalcore's most revered catalogs through chaotic riffs, atomizing breakdowns, and Dan Weyandt's rawly personal vocals - a combination the underground eventually tagged "snake metal." Where other acts from the Christian hardcore scene stayed put, Zao kept expanding outward: into dark atmospherics, Neurosis-like meditations, and Steve Albini-recorded thunder, all while surviving a near-total rotation of members over three decades. Bands like Underoath, Thrice, and Fall Out Boy grew up on their records. The current lineup, stable since 2005, continues releasing work, with their 2021 album The Crimson Corridor and the 2026 covers EP Pillars showing that thirty years of creative pressure has not dulled much.
