Willi Carlisle

Willi Carlisle is an American folksinger, songwriter, and playwright who grew up on the Kansas plains and now works out of the Arkansas Ozarks, where he went looking for old ballads and stayed for the rest of it. He came to folk music through punk, then earned an MFA in poetry at the University of Arkansas after deciding that contemporary verse had lost the ability to talk to ordinary people. His songs are populated by ditch diggers, horse girls, and small-town eccentrics, delivered with guitar, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and a concertina he plays like a man arguing with it. Across four albums including Peculiar, Missouri, Critterland, and the self-produced Winged Victory, he has built a body of work that treats absurdity and philosophy as the same subject. His 2026 double album The Universal Bubba, seventeen songs cut in a makeshift New Orleans home studio, was produced by Tyler Childers and stretches into funk and Cajun territory without leaving the front porch behind.
