Velocity Girl

Velocity Girl formed in 1989 at the University of Maryland, surfacing from a Washington, D.C. underground that was quietly widening what a punk band could sound like. Their signature was a collision of shoegaze feedback with an instinct for the clean pop hook - a sound critics labeled "bubblegrunge." Their 1993 debut Copacetic on Sub Pop became the label's second-biggest seller at the time, sitting just behind Nirvana's Bleach. The band split in 1996 after three albums, then returned for a string of shows starting in 2023 and released UltraCopacetic in 2024, a remixed and expanded version of Copacetic rebuilt from the original tapes by guitarist Archie Moore.
