Tricky // False Idols
Born Adrian Thaws in Knowle West, Bristol, Tricky came up through the city's underground scene as an early member of Massive Attack, co-producing their landmark 1992 debut before breaking away to define a sound entirely his own. His 1995 debut Maxinquaye—named for his late mother—established the template: drums buried in murk, guitar lines that feel borrowed from somewhere dangerous, and a half-rapped vocal delivered in an asthmatic whisper that makes everything sound like a confession. Fourteen studio albums and two million copies later, he remains a genuinely singular figure, the kind of artist that critics still reach for when they need a reference point for dark, claustrophobic electronic music. Now based in Berlin and running his own False Idols imprint, he continues releasing work that sounds like no obvious antecedent.
