Stephen Lee Bruner — the Los Angeles bassist, singer, and songwriter who records as Thundercat — grew up in a household where his father drummed for the Temptations, picked up the bass at four, and by his teens was touring with Suicidal Tendencies. His solo work, released on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label since 2011, sits at the intersection of jazz-fusion, soul, and progressive R&B: technically superhuman bass playing wrapped around songs whose humor and warmth disarm you before the complexity can. He won two Grammy Awards — one for his role at the creative center of Kendrick Lamar's *To Pimp a Butterfly*, another for his own album *It Is What It Is* — and Rolling Stone has placed him among the greatest bass players of all time. His 2026 album *Distracted* continues a run of collaborations that reads like a wish list: Mac Miller, Tame Impala, A$AP Rocky, Childish Gambino, Flying Lotus.
