The Protomen
The Protomen formed in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in 2003, when a cluster of Middle Tennessee State University students turned a beloved video game's spare plot into something closer to a Wagnerian tragedy, all synthesizers, gang vocals, and men in silver welding masks who have never used their real names onstage. Their three-part rock opera follows a robot uprising toward a conclusion the band has openly admitted will not end well for humanity, told across three studio albums released over two decades apart, the last of which, This City Made Us, cracked the Billboard top ten in January 2026. Onstage they favor spectacle over subtlety: pyrotechnics, LED-lit masks, a narrator character called the Announcer, and set lists that treat an audience like a congregation rather than a crowd. The band has played Bonnaroo, SXSW, and the full run of Warped Tour, and was once invited by the game's own publisher to perform at its Comic-Con booth. Somewhere between hard rock, progressive rock, and the genre now known as geek rock, The Protomen built a catalog that reads less like an album cycle and more like a long-running myth, one still being told by musicians who guard their real names as closely as the plot's own ending.
