the Mountain Goats

The Mountain Goats began in 1991 as a one-man operation: John Darnielle, a psychiatric nurse in Norwalk, California, recording songs onto a Panasonic boombox and releasing them in cassette-only runs on independent labels. The tape hiss was never a flaw to be engineered out — it was part of the texture, a kind of lo-fi signature that suited lyrics too specific and too dark to belong anywhere comfortable. Rolling Stone named Darnielle rock's best storyteller in 2015, a title earned through three decades of songs built around addicts, abusive households, wrestlers, and recurring fictional characters who drift in and out of albums like figures spotted briefly through a window. The project has grown from a solo cassette imprint into a full band — now anchored by bassist Peter Hughes, drummer Jon Wurster, and multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas — without losing the quality that made the early recordings matter: Darnielle writes sentences that hurt.
