The Field

Swedish producer Axel Willner has spent two decades building a body of work under the name The Field that is easier to feel than to categorize. Working from Berlin, he constructs tracks from micro-sampled fragments of pop songs — a snatch of Lionel Richie here, a chord from Kate Bush there — stretched and looped into long-form ambient techno that moves like weather rather than music. His 2007 debut, From Here We Go Sublime, landed on Pitchfork's list of the top 100 albums of the 2000s and established the loop-as-architecture approach that has defined every release since. In May 2026, after eight years of near-silence, Willner returned with the five-track EP Now You Exist on Studio Barnhus — less club-ready than his Kompakt catalogue, more like towering instrumental post-rock built from tidal waves of static and meditative chord progressions that seem to gather emotional weight the longer they run.
