The Anchoress

Catherine Anne Davies trained as a classical flautist, then spent years quietly dismantling her own formation—teaching herself every other instrument, accumulating production credits, co-writing on Top 20 albums before anyone had settled on a label for what she was doing. Under the name The Anchoress, the Welsh producer and songwriter makes gothic chamber pop that moves between melancholic guitar anthems and vintage-synth art rock, her voice landing somewhere between confessor and provocateur. Her self-produced second album, *The Art of Losing*, reached the UK Top 40 and the iTunes number-one spot; Elton John named it among his favourite records of the year, alongside praise from The Sunday Times, Prog, and the Mail on Sunday. Davies holds a PhD in Literature, teaches Music Production and Songwriting at university level, and has earned three consecutive Music Producers Guild nominations—a record that makes her the rare artist whose craft is equally legible on the stage and in the lecture hall.
