Sylvan Esso
Sylvan Esso is Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn, a Durham, North Carolina duo who have spent since 2013 building songs out of the friction between a folk singer's voice and a synth player's hands. Meath came from the a cappella trio Mountain Man, Sanborn from the experimental folk band Megafaun, and their 2014 debut turned that unlikely pairing into a record that reached No. 39 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of "Coffee" and "Hey Mami." Two of the albums that followed, What Now and Free Love, earned Grammy nominations for Best Dance/Electronic Album. The band now records at Betty's, its own studio in the woods outside Chapel Hill, and releases through its own label, Psychic Hotline. Their fifth album, Ow ∞, arrives in September 2026 after four years of writing, most of its vocals kept from Meath's first takes and its rhythm tracks split among six different drummers.
