Swervedriver
Swervedriver formed in Oxford in 1989 around guitarist-vocalist Adam Franklin and guitarist Jimmy Hartridge, arriving in the middle of the shoegaze scene while sounding like they'd wandered in from a louder, dustier party down the road. Where their peers built walls of chorus-pedal haze, the band reached for muscle-car imagery and American guitar rock, fusing Dinosaur Jr.-style fuzz with widescreen melody across albums like Raise and Mezcal Head. Signed first to Creation Records and later A&M, they charted in the UK before splitting in 1998, then reconvened a decade later for a run of records, including I Wasn't Born to Lose You and Future Ruins, that found the same restless energy at a slower cruising speed. Franklin has remained the band's constant, steering a lineup that has weathered four decades, several labels, and one long hiatus without losing its taste for distortion and open road.
