Soul Mass Transit System is a Leeds-based DJ and producer who has carved out an unusually precise position in British underground dance music: the exact overlap where speed garage's rubbery bass pressure meets the snapping rhythms of 2-step and jungle. Operating under this name since 2020 — the moniker itself a Simpsons reference, in keeping with a string of aliases pulled from the same source — the project has moved quickly. A nomination for Breakthrough Producer at DJ Mag's 2022 Best of British Awards came early. Releases on Ministry of Sound, Shall Not Fade's Time Is Now sub-label, and Leeds imprint Gimme A Break Records followed. Headlining Boiler Room's return to his home city in 2024 was the kind of set that arrives fully formed: an hour of tightly wound UKG and breakbeat that sent the crowd sideways.
