Sleaford Mods

Formed in Nottingham in 2007, Sleaford Mods are vocalist Jason Williamson and producer Andrew Fearn — a duo whose formula looks almost perversely minimal on paper: looped beats stripped to bass and percussion, no guitar, and Williamson's East Midlands voice delivering rapid-fire, profanity-laced commentary on unemployment, austerity, and the daily grind of British working-class life. The sparseness is the point. With nothing to hide behind, every syllable lands somewhere between pub argument and punk poetry, drawing comparisons to Mark E. Smith, Ian Dury, and Mike Skinner without quite being any of them. Their 2014 album Divide and Exit cracked open a wider audience; subsequent Rough Trade releases charted consistently, with Spare Ribs reaching the top of the UK vinyl singles chart in 2021. Along the way they've collaborated with The Prodigy, Leftfield, and Orbital, and their 2026 album The Demise of Planet X shows no sign of the formula softening.
