SHINER
Shiner formed in Kansas City in 1992 and spent a decade building the kind of catalog that outlives its own era: four albums of heavy, melodic rock, culminating in 2001's The Egg, a record that found most of its audience after the band had already stopped existing. Guitarist and vocalist Allen Epley leads a lineup rounded out by bassist Paul Malinowski, drummer Jason Gerken, and guitarist Josh Newton, and their sound trades in the same territory as Hum, Failure, and Swervedriver - punishing riffs and odd time signatures wrapped around hooks that refuse to leave. They played a farewell show at Kansas City's Madrid Theater in 2003, then returned in 2012 to oversee vinyl reissues and discovered the diehards had multiplied. Schadenfreude arrived in 2020, followed by 2025's BELIEVEYOUME, cut mostly live at Malinowski's Massive Sound studio with fewer pre-written ideas and more reacting in the room. The 2026 collection The Y Section gathers the rarities and unreleased material from across the full arc, including a heavy-eyed reading of My Bloody Valentine's "Only Shallow."
