Forme is the alias of Richard "Rich" File, a British producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist who first recorded under the name in 1995 as a collaboration with Mo' Wax art director Will Bankhead - the two pulling samples from Bankhead's record collection and building "New Element" at Ilian Walker's studio. The track landed on both Mo' Wax's Headz 2A compilation and LTJ Bukem's Logical Progression that year; Bukem was already spinning it at Dreamscape events before either record was pressed. When Bankhead departed in 2000, File continued Forme alone on Adam Freeland's Marine Parade label, where his breakbeat singles developed a tribal weight that Fabric director Shaun Roberts reportedly called the best thing he had ever heard through the club's sound system. Between those chapters, File spent nearly a decade as co-writer, producer, and performer in UNKLE alongside James Lavelle, appearing on Never, Never, Land (2003) and War Stories (2007) with contributors from Brian Eno and Josh Homme to Ian Brown and Keith Flint. He returned to the Forme name in 2020 with new material bound by a self-imposed rule: no samples from after 1997.
