Neurosis
Neurosis began in Oakland in 1985 as a crust punk outfit, three teenagers playing fast and hard in the tradition of British anarcho-punk. By 1992, they were doing something else entirely. The slow, crushing architecture of Souls at Zero — riffs that arrived like geological events, sampling and electronics woven through the noise, song structures that refused to resolve when the listener expected them to — pointed toward a sound that had no genre name yet. Through Silver in Blood (1996) made the name unavoidable: post-metal, the critics eventually settled on, a form described by the BBC as taking "heavy music to previously unimaginable spaces." Decades of records followed, with bands from Mastodon to Isis to Chelsea Wolfe citing the band as foundational. In March 2026, after a seven-year silence, Neurosis returned without announcement — twelve studio album, new vocalist Aaron Turner replacing a departed frontman, same uncompromising weight.
