Nation of Language

Nation of Language is a Brooklyn trio — Ian Devaney on vocals, his wife Aidan Noell on synthesizer, and Alex MacKay on bass — whose origin can be dated to a single car stereo moment: Devaney, formerly of indie rock outfit the Static Jacks, riding with his father and hearing OMD's "Electricity" for the first time in years. He set down the guitar, picked up a monophonic synth, and began writing with what he calls a beginner's mind. The band's 2020 debut Introduction, Presence was funded by wedding gift donations collected in lieu of a traditional registry; three years later Strange Disciple took Rough Trade's top album slot of 2023. Their music draws from the same Krautrock and post-punk vein that produced Kraftwerk, New Order, and Joy Division, without tipping into pastiche. Fourth album Dance Called Memory arrived on Sub Pop in September 2025, produced by Nick Millhiser of LCD Soundsystem.
