nat birchall
Nat Birchall is a British tenor and soprano saxophonist, composer, and bandleader from the North of England, whose work has made him a quiet cornerstone of the UK's spiritual jazz scene. Praised by broadcaster Gilles Peterson as one of the finest musicians in the country, his sound draws deep from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders while threading in Jamaican roots and dub — an unlikely pairing that turns out to be entirely his own. He was a key figure, alongside trumpeter Matthew Halsall, in shaping the Manchester spiritual jazz movement, beginning with his debut in 1999 and gaining wider recognition with the 2009 cult record Akhenaten. Unflashy and unhurried, his playing trades on conviction over complexity — harmonically spare, rhythmically grounded, and built to last.
