mssv - short for Main Steam Stop Valve, a term lifted from the 1966 film The Sand Pebbles - is an American power trio built around guitarist Mike Baggetta, drummer Stephen Hodges, and bassist Mike Watt. Watt's résumé spans the Minutemen, fIREHOSE, and a long stint with the Stooges; Hodges has played sessions with Tom Waits and Mavis Staples. Together they occupy a space between driving post-punk and open-ended free improvisation - what the band itself calls "post-genre." Their working method is as deliberate as their sound: songs are written before each tour, road-tested nightly across dozens of shows, then recorded immediately after with producer Chris Schlarb at BIG EGO Studio in Long Beach. Four albums in, See You Through (2026) marked a turn toward longer, drone-heavy forms, drawing on Curtis Mayfield, Alice Coltrane, and Neil Young.
