MONO is a Tokyo-based four-piece instrumental rock band that has been building its catalog since 1999, pairing layered shoegaze guitars—drenched in reverb and distortion—with chamber orchestras to produce music that moves between near-silence and crushing volume within a single breath. The band spent their early years in near-constant motion, touring Asia, Europe, and North America across roughly 150 shows a year, eventually reaching more than 60 countries and earning a reputation as one of the most viscerally powerful live acts working in any genre. Thirteen studio albums deep, they have recorded extensively with the late Steve Albini and scored films ranging from a Haruki Murakami adaptation to a Netflix documentary, with NME once declaring their sound "music for the Gods." Their 2025 album Snowdrop, recorded at Albini's own Electrical Audio studio with producer Brad Wood, finds the band channeling grief into something luminous—a ten-piece orchestra, an eight-piece choir, and the kind of emotional scale that makes genre labels feel beside the point.
