Mitski
Mitski - born Mitsuki Laycock in Japan's Mie Prefecture, to an American father and a Japanese mother - grew up across more than a dozen countries before studying composition at SUNY Purchase's Conservatory of Music in New York. Her eight studio albums form a restless catalog: the serrated indie rock of Bury Me at Makeout Creek and Puberty 2 gave way to the synth gloss of Laurel Hell and then the spare, country-inflected orchestrations of The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, each record reconsidering what the last one settled for. Iggy Pop called her "probably the most advanced American songwriter that I know"; The Guardian seconded that view four years later. Her 2023 single "My Love Mine All Mine" became her first Billboard Hot 100 entry, the same year a song she co-wrote for Everything Everywhere All at Once earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
