Karl Hector & The Malcouns
Munich-based Karl Hector & The Malcouns coalesced in 2008 around guitarist and producer JJ Whitefield (born Jan Weissenfeldt) and The Malcouns' rhythm section — keyboardist Thomas Myland and drummer Zdenko Curulija, all veterans of the Poets of Rhythm. Their debut, Sahara Swing, planted a flag at the intersection of Afrobeat, jazz-funk, and Krautrock, drawing a line from James Brown and Fela Kuti through Can and Amon Düül without flinching. Four albums deep, with 2026's Yolek pressing further into kosmische territory, the band describes their own sound as "Kraut-Funk" — a term that fits better than any genre tag anyone else has managed to coin. Munich's 1970s experimental underground isn't just an influence here; it's structural DNA, treated not as nostalgia but as a living compositional method.
