KALI MALONE
Kali Malone writes music that refuses to hurry: slow harmonic cycles for pipe organ, choir, brass and sine-wave oscillators, tuned to historical temperaments and just intonation rather than the twelve equal steps most ears take for granted. Born in Denver in 1994, she moved to Stockholm at eighteen, studied electroacoustic composition at the Royal College of Music, ran sound at the artist-run venue Fylkingen, and interned as a pipe organ tuner, which explains a great deal. The Sacrificial Code, nearly two hours of organ canons released in 2019, made her name. Living Torch followed as a commission from the GRM in Paris, built partly from sounds of Éliane Radigue's ARP 2500 synthesizer, and All Life Long, which braids organ, choir and brass into one long exhale, earned a nomination for Best Classical Music at the Swedish Grammis. She co-founded the Stockholm label and concert series XKatedral with Maria W Horn, and her collaborators include Stephen O'Malley, Lucy Railton, Caterina Barbieri and Drew McDowall.
