Joshua Chuquimia Crampton

Joshua Chuquimia Crampton is a California-based guitarist and composer belonging to the Great Pakajaqi Nation of Aymara people, whose solo work treats the electric guitar less as an instrument than as a weather system. Since 2020, he has released five full-length albums through his own Puro Fantasía imprint, each recorded to tape using a hand-drawn notation system built on images and "events" rather than standard scores. His compositions layer distortion, tape manipulation, and traditional Andean ceremonial rhythms into dense, often hour-long structures that draw comparisons to shoegaze and noise music while resembling neither very closely. He also performs as one half of Los Thuthanaka alongside his sibling Chuquimamani-Condori, reworking huayño, caporal, and kullawada into experimental electronic forms. His work has been presented at Haus der Kunst in Munich and Auto Italia in London, and he scored the collaborative film Amaru's Tongue: Daughter (2021).
