John Carpenter

John Carpenter is an American filmmaker and composer born in 1948 whose synthesizer-driven scores — sparse, menacing, built from a handful of repeating notes — defined the sound of horror cinema for a generation and quietly rewrote the rules for what a director could do with a keyboard. The themes he wrote for Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, and a dozen other films were composed out of practical necessity as much as artistic vision, yet they outlasted the budgets that produced them, influencing a wave of electronic artists who grew up watching the movies with the volume too loud. Starting in 2015 with Lost Themes on Sacred Bones Records, he began releasing standalone albums untethered from any film, five in total through 2024, each one proof that the music was always its own argument. The French Directors' Guild gave him the Golden Coach Award at Cannes in 2019; in April 2025, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
