Iapetus

Iapetus writes progressive, melodic death metal built for widescreen listening: dense with blast beats and orchestral sweep, tuned to themes of grief, mortality, and the sheer indifference of space. The New York duo of Matthew Cerami and Jordan Navarro has spent the past decade and a half building toward a trilogy of concept albums, a project that closes in October 2026 with The Mother Void, which sets the story of a mother and son against the birth and death of stars. Guests on the record read like a compilation of extreme metal's technical elite: Eluveitie vocalist Fabienne Erni, Ne Obliviscaris guitarist Benji Baret, and Invent Animate drummer Brody Taylor Smith. Their 2019 album, The Body Cosmic, cemented a reputation for pairing crushing weight with genuine melodic craft - work mixed by producer Jens Bogren, whose credits sit near the top of the genre. One reviewer placed the band among the elite of atmospheric death metal, and their catalog, five releases deep since a 2011 demo, has the scale to back that claim up.
