Horn and Licht Erlischt are the twin solo projects of Niklas Thiele, who records under the name Nerrath from Paderborn, Germany — a city he has spent two decades translating into sound. Since founding Horn in 2002, Nerrath has written, performed, and recorded everything himself: guitars, real drums, keyboards, vocals, and the atmospheric horns the project takes its name from. Horn carves out a space between ferocious melodic black metal and neofolk introspection, its recurring subjects the Westphalian forests, medieval mercenaries, and the weight of two world wars — all sung in German. Licht Erlischt pulls darker, into funeral doom, where the same one-man operation grinds to a slower and more desolate frequency. Across more than ten full-lengths and a run of limited vinyl editions through labels including Northern Silence and Iron Bonehead, Nerrath has built a discography that rewards the listener patient enough to trace its arc.
