Liz Harris began recording as Grouper in 2005, working from a coastal town in Oregon where isolation itself became a kind of instrument. Her music buries acoustic guitar and half-whispered vocals under thick layers of tape hiss and reverb, so that songs arrive already half-remembered, more felt than heard. Albums like Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill and the two-part A I A established her as a singular voice in ambient and psychedelic folk, work that critics have called mysterious and moving in equal measure. Harris rarely grants interviews and often performs with the stage lights down, treating anonymity as part of the composition rather than an evasion of it. Beyond Grouper, she has recorded as Nivhek and Raum, formed the trio Helen, and paired with Jesy Fortino as Mirrorring, while running her own imprint, YELLOWELECTRIC, to release art editions alongside the music. Her twelfth album, Shade, gathered recordings made over fifteen years into a single quiet document of return.
