Fief
Fief is the anonymous composer working out of Salt Lake City who has spent a decade turning digital synths into something like a lute, a harpsichord, and a forest all at once. Since his 2016 debut, he has built one of dungeon synth's most listened-to catalogs: seven albums, released through the fantasy-music label Out of Season, that trade the genre's older dungeon-crawl gloom for lighter, more pastoral airs. Some critics call this a drift, arguing the sound has wandered from the genre's black-metal roots. It hasn't slowed him down. A 2025 history of the genre finally cracked his decade-old secret: Fief also records as Thangorodrim and Sequestered Keep, three names for one composer working across a spectrum from courtly light to cavernous dark. What began as a solitary hobby traded on message boards and cassette runs now reaches well beyond the niche that raised it, drawing tens of thousands of casual listeners a month to music that never once explains its own imaginary world.
