Far Apart

Far Apart formed in Luleå, Sweden in 1995, taking their name from a song by The Cure, and spent four years carving out a raw, melodic strain of emo indebted to Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, and Jawbox. The quartet - Mats Ömalm, Kalle Nyman, Stefan Sundström, and Tomas Nilsén - self-released the Hazel 7" in 1997, watched it get picked up by an American label the following year, and turned down major-label interest to keep touring Europe on their own terms. They split in 1999, but Hazel kept circulating through message boards and mixtapes long after the band stopped existing, quietly becoming one of the era's most disinterred cult records. In 2025, two independent labels reissued the band's catalog, restored and remastered with previously unheard recordings, introducing Far Apart to a generation of listeners who had only ever heard the songs as blurry rips.
