Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada are brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin, a Scottish electronic duo who have been recording together since the mid-1980s from their Hexagon Sun studio in the Pentland Hills. Their name comes from the National Film Board of Canada, whose nature documentaries and educational films shaped a sound built on vintage synthesiser tones, manipulated tape samples, and hip-hop-derived rhythms that evoke the grain and warmth of deteriorating 1970s broadcast media. Their 1998 debut Music Has the Right to Children redefined home-listening electronic music and remains one of the most referenced records in the genre; the darker, more conceptual Geogaddi followed in 2002, the guitar-laced The Campfire Headphase in 2005, and the cinematic Tomorrow's Harvest in 2013 after a seven-year silence. Their fifth album Inferno is set for release in May 2026. Cryptic and reclusive by disposition, they have not performed live since 2001, rarely grant interviews, and have promoted their work through elaborate alternate reality games rather than conventional press cycles.
