Black Marble
Black Marble is the solo project of LA-based multi-instrumentalist Chris Stewart, who surfaced from Brooklyn's early-2010s coldwave underground and was signed to the Sub Pop imprint Hardly Art after posting just one song online. His debut full-length A Different Arrangement (2012) established a sound anchored in monotone baritone, analog synths, and reverb deep enough to drown in — melodically hooky underneath the frost, and unambiguously shaped by Joy Division and New Order's Peter Hook. Three albums followed across three labels: It's Immaterial on Ghostly International (2016), then Bigger Than Life (2019) and Fast Idol (2021) on Sacred Bones, each one admitting a little more light into the arrangements without quite warming the room. Stewart writes, plays, and produces everything himself, a DIY approach that traces back to the bedroom-minimal-synth tradition he draws from as directly as any chord change.
