Björk Guðmundsdóttir made her first record at eleven, fronted the Sugarcubes when Reykjavík was not yet a place international labels went looking for bands, and has spent the three decades since refusing to make the same album twice. The solo catalogue runs from the club warmth of Debut and Post through the strings-and-breakbeats architecture of Homogenic, the close-miked whisper of Vespertine, and Medúlla, assembled almost entirely from human voices. She has sold more than 22 million records, holds five BRIT Awards and sixteen Grammy nominations, and won Best Actress at Cannes for Dancer in the Dark, a role she has said she has no interest in repeating. Fossora, her ninth studio album, arrived in 2022 built around a sextet of bass clarinets. In 2026 she and artist James Merry filled all four galleries of the National Gallery of Iceland with Echolalia, where one installation previews music from a record now expected in 2027.
